030 – To Be Expected
Oglevee was originally the name of Kevin’s small town. But, as I kept using it, I started getting too much of a ‘back in St. Olaf ‘ vibe from the name.
I put way too much effort into coming up with plausible fake hometown names for these guys. They’re all based on actual places but aren’t actually those places. That way I can avoid all research have some freedom with how I depict their backgrounds while approximating real neighborhoods that I’ve never been to.
No one from Flossmoor would ever be like that? Good thing Dana’s from Rosepine, Illinois. Who makes the best burger in Utica, New York? Don’t care because Quincy’s from Lawnville. Etc. So I get to be sort of authentic without being nailed down on the details. Because who wants to be accountable for anything really?
I’ve never thought about who makes the best burger in Utica, NY, and I was born and raised there. Now if you want to talk about who makes the best tomato pie . . . Quincy seems like he would love tomato pie.
If it enters the mouth, Quincy loves it.
I want to know who makes the best tomato pie.
Is Kevin starting to come around a tad bit, hmmmm?
Just a tad. One tad at a time.
Dana is being quite wonderful here. Good back story for Kevin, too. My home town was so vanilla, the municipal motto was “The City Friendly to Industry”. Better than being known for a killer, at least.
Oh, there’s a lot going on with Kevin’s backstory. I already teased a little. We’ll get to the fulness thereof at some point.
now if you were you were looking for good small town names in Saskatchewan, i am surprised you didn’t come up with my favorite – ‘Piapot’ Saskatchewan… yes, it does exist… barely. Say it out loud in any American accent you want, and it still will come out the same.
I tried coming up with something First Nation-y, but then I thought, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t try to come up with something First Nation-y.’
I just remembered – Kevin 1.0 sometimes had a Flyspeck Island vibe. I think you’re heading in a different direction with 2.0, which is good. Still looking forward to Cory* 2.0.
*Or name to be determined later.
Ha! I’m from Flossmoor.
